Christ

Christianity is based on the worship of Jesus Christ, or Jesus the Messiah, as the Son of God and the unique self-manifestation of God before men. At the same time, Jesus appears to us as a man who in his lifetime was completely unknown outside the part of the vast Roman Empire where he lived, preached, and died.

How historical is the figure of Jesus Christ? The answer to this question is variously given in the available sources. The first point of view, which appeared in the XVII – XVIII centuries., argues that it is necessary to carefully examine the texts of the Gospels and separate the historical figure of Jesus from the image of Christ, which has nothing to do with historical truth.

According to the second point of view, which arose in the early XX century., Jesus Christ-a mythical character (A. Tree). Most modern studies, however, recognize the historicity of Jesus. In any case, this personality has left such a deep mark in history, so influenced the development of civilization, that it is difficult to find an analogue that could somehow be comparable with it.

A. Schweitzer famously said this in his work “On the historicity of Jesus”: “the Greatest achievement of German theology is a critical study of the life of Jesus. In this matter, she outlined the conditions and predetermined the course of development of religious thought in the future. From a historical point of view, her work has been negative; it, so to speak, cleared the way for the new buildings of religious thought. In describing how the ideas of Jesus took possession of the Greek spirit, German theology traces the development of what must seem strange to us, and does seem so.
